Slim Whitman - R.I.P.

Singer. Regarded as a leading figure in American country music. Born Ottis Dewey Whitman, Jr., he recorded and sang legendary songs including notably "Indian Love Call" (1952), "Secret Love" (1953) and "Rose Marie" (1955), which also climbed the British music charts. His song "Indian Love Call" was used by film director Tim Burton for the grotesque fantasy film "Mars Attacks!" (1996). In the film the song plays a key role as the only weapon able to defeat the alien invaders. In a career that spanned nearly sixty years, he sold over one hundred million records worldwide. He died of heart failure at the age of ninety.

He grew up in east Tampa where his dad, Otis Dewey Whitman, Sr., lived.  He died in 2013 in northeast Florida.
