Charlie
Brown
One of the most famous WALT Good Guys of the
mid 1960s, Charlie Brown was a firecracker DJ with machine gun
rapidity. He was indeed one of the best screamers in Top 40 radio
history. He made WALT hop during his afternoon drive slot.
Charlie came to Tampa bay from West
Virginia, and worked at WALT until the station went MOR IN
1967. Charlie, whose real
name is Carl Troxell, resurfaced in the early 1970s at WLCY,
doing a more reserved act as the morning man and Program Director.
He staged the best radio contest in the history of Tampa Bay,
it was called ‘The Last Contest’.
Charlie Brown left Tampa Bay in 1974 and headed to St Louis,
where he was a star at KMOX radio. Brown stayed for several years
before departing. Latest rumor is he became a missionary and
headed off to some Pacific Island.
No one has heard from Charlie Brown in years.
Truly a great talent, Tampa Bay Radio Hall of Fame |
