Dick
Norman “Uncle Dickie” revolutionized Talk
Radio as we know it. He came to Tampa Bay in the mid 1980s from
Cincinnati. He had been moderately successful in Ohio, but something
happened when he hit the airwaves of Tampa Bay! Dick was an instant
hit, you either loved him or hated him, but you listened. The first “Battle of The Talk Show Hosts”
on WFLA in 1987 featuring Dick, Tedd Webb and Bob Lassiter, is
a boot leg special on the internet among air check collectors. Dick’s biggest moment was perhaps the
day the State of Florida executed serial killer Ted Bundy. Norman,
Tedd Webb and Courtney Campbell did play by play of a “fantasy
parade” through the streets of downtown Tampa. Dick’s
description of then Governor Bob Martinez draping his jacket over
his shoulder was so realistic, everyone could picture the event. Who was to know that a short time later, on
that same radio station, his fans would be mourning his death
from a traffic accident on January 26th 1989. |
