Dick
Stambaugh The original “morning mayor of Great
Tampa Bay” as Roy Nillson would bill him, was the AM drive
host at WLCY starting in 1960. Dick was on a staff featuring Dave
Archerd, Nillson, Rock Robbins, and Marshall Cleaver. Stambaugh came from a local family in St Peters-burg,
a very talented man who not only wanted to be on the air, but
had programming desires. With Roy Nillson at the helm, Dicks chances
were slim. Stambaugh moved to Miami’s WFUN where
he changed his name to Dick Starr. Programming opportunities came
later and he did quite well. Not only did he conquer Miami, but
also programmed KYA in San Francisco. He later became national program director
for the Rounsaville radio chain, and was the owner of Opus Productions
in Dallas.
He moved back to St. Petersburg after being diagnosed with cancer.
Dick Stambaugh died at the age of 41 in October 1982. |
