J.
Paul Robinson
(Barney Grovan)
This Ohio native was a sharp cookie. He came
down to Florida in 1965, had been married to Lolita, the overnight
lady on WLCY. Paul Robinson went to work for Roy Nillson as a
newsman. He was a damned good one. He possessed that deep voice
often associated with the 1950s and 60s newsmen.
Paul was doing a little consulting on the
side, prog-ramming a few radio stations in West Virginia, Ocala
and in Asheville, North Carolina. It is there he met Tedd Webb,
who had been doing mornings at WCWR in Clearwater.
J. Paul, who was still an employee of WLCY
did his company a favor by hiring Tedd, Joey jay, John Anthony
and Dangerous Danny Miller (AJ Anello) for his station WKKE in
Asheville. In a matter of hours, there was no more competition.
After his career in radio, he and his wife
Carlotta (Roy Nillson’s ex) started Robinson’s Racing
Pigs, and would travel with Royal American Shows across the country.
J Paul did the carney trick until his death from cancer in 1998.
