Karen
Putna Boyd
After working at the few Tampa Bay area stations
that would even consider hiring her and getting fired from most
of them, Karen went back to USF in 1985 and completed her degree
in English Literature. She graduated in 1987 and went to work
in Public Relations at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.
Since Karen learned fluent swearing from Jack Harris, Tedd Webb
and her brother, former Marine Corps Master Sergeant, Michael
Putna, going to work at a Catholic hospital was probably not her
best career choice.
Guess what... radio stations are not the only
employ-ers that fire people. Karen then worked on five editions
of the Hooters calendar... (yeah, yeah... you’re the first
witty guy to say "Oh, are there jokes in that calendar.").
Karen’s work has also appeared in the Washington Post. (O.K.
O.K... when Hooters was opening a store in Baltimore, the president
of NOW wrote an editorial protesting it in the Washington Post
and one of Karen’s jokes was cited as an example of Hooters
particularly crude and childish humor.) Beecher Martin then hired
Karen for her third stint at WQVK, where she worked until 1997.
Karen married William Boyd in 1996. They lived
in New Tampa and traveled extensively... mostly because the places
they stay usually don’t want them to come back.
Update 12/2005:
Karen died in her sleep Sunday night Dec 11th, 2005.
