Ken
Copper
Ken Copper came to WDAE in May
of 1975 from the Lakeland/Winter Haven market. He took
over mornings from Rick Morgan who had seen the insanity
of waking each day at 4 a.m. and had moved to the afternoons. Bill
Campbell did middays for a while and then John DeHaven saddled
up when Bill left for Atlanta and WGST. Marc Champion, Page
Bryant and Stan Major were doing talk shows in the
evenings. Ron Ebben, Dennis Crandall, Bob Clark and Katherine
Bradley constituted most of the excellent news department. Ken
always enjoyed his morning “chat with Ron” which
was never designed to be heard by management. Lt. Al
Ford was in the air every morning and Pat George, “boy
janitor to the stars”, was cleaning up, hanging around
and chasing women.
In August of 1976 Ken was hired for afternoon
drive at KOGO in San Diego. After five years in
San Diego, Ken began what he refers to as his “West
Coast Tour” of: Mornings at K-101 in San
Francisco, and KTAC in Seattle/Tacoma. Then it was
on to ownership of KKLZ-FM in Las Vegas, which he put
on the air in February of 1984. Tiring of a “real
job” with real responsibilities, Ken sold the station and
returned to San Diego in 1986. Back in San Diego, Ken spent
five years in afternoon drive at KCBQ AM & FM, seven
years in morning drive at KBZT-FM and for the last few
years has been holding forth in the afternoon at Clear Channel’s
KPOP with partner Cynthia Heath-Kerrigan.
Ken spends his mornings doing voice over work
for various regional and national advertisers. Among his
clients are: Fox Sports, Upper Deck, Featherlite, The
History Channel, Hasbro and others. Ken is still married
to Linda and has two daughters: Kelly, an
artist living in New York City and Katie, an assistant
D.A. in San Diego. |
