Marvelous
Marvin
Radio is in his blood, a second generation
radio guy, his dad was a DJ and newsman in Cleveland and other
parts, and warned his son NOT to get into the biz, Marvin has
never listened. Marvelous Marvin went to a broadcasting school
behind his Dad’s back. Dad was livid!
Marvin Boone came to Tampa Bay in 1978 in New
Port Richey at WGUL, this as a result of the radio school’s
placement service. The rest is history.
In 1980 Marvin started an oldies request show
“Old Gold Retold”, where he actually placed request.
He played Frank Zappa and Little Walter back to back, and despite
the clash, WGUL started getting ratings on Saturday Night !!!
In 1983 Marvin brought
his act to Magic 96, doing a Saturday Oldies Show. The late Scott
Robbins heard Marvin, loved him, added the name “Marvelous”
and moved him to mid days. Marvin has been there ever since, except
for his one year hiatus into talk radio at WFLA 1999. His program
was not Y2K ready he jokes.
Marvin is regarded as the most prolific music
man in the Tampa Bay market. His knowledge of music is vast and
thorough. I remember calling him up one Saturday night while he
was at Mix 96 and asking for Patty and The Emblems. He got it
on in 2 minutes. Impressed the hell out of me that he knew the
song, and that he had a copy.
Marvelous Marvin has the style that soothes,
and you can tell by listening to him he is having a great time
on the radio. Fans have become attached to his wit and wisdom,
and for many like me, he is a regular mid day habit we just can’t
kick.
First ballot entry into the Tampa Bay Radio
Hall of Fame.
