Where Are They Now?

Sandy Hall

Sandy’s broadcast background started in 1972 at the University of South Florida while a mandatory internship was imposed on Mass Communication students. Not afraid of touching every knob on the control room board constantly, intern supervisor Norm Palumbo, the only employed person in the “real” industry, decided to take hold of this enthusiasm by recommending Sandy for his job doing “God Squad” Sunday mornings from 2am to 6am on WFLA radio. “It was a great way to get her out of USF’s control room.”

WFLA program director Rod Weller hired her on the spot. “Little did I know that Norm was just as glad to dump this shift as I was thrilled to have it!” The job was soon expanded from God Squad to God Squad plus full time overnights. After 2 hours of training, Roger Christy waved good by and good luck. “On my own, I couldn’t believe it. I stunk those first couple of nights. And, I had to face a legendary Jack Harris in the morning.” Rod Weller called her in one afternoon for a very serious talk about being the first, full time, female jock the station ever hired. “I was a pioneer so was cautioned about my feminine wiles.” Jack left for New York, and a guy named Russ Offenbach took over. Then one night an 18 year old guy shows up named Gary McHenry. I was told… train him. Jack came back. I had arrived.

WFLA radio lasted until 1976 when a jump was made to WLCY radio as writer/producer/continuity and public affairs. There a cast of colorful characters unfolded,
