Woody
Garcia Woody was working at English language radio
stations like WTSP with guys like Gordon Solie before he found
his niche’ in Spanish radio. He was the heir to the throne
of Ruben Fabelo who dominated the 1950s, the 60s belonged to Woody. He was a loveable man, great personality, very
up and very hip for the time. He spent the best years of his career
at WSOL. He also did some Spanish TV for WEDU Ch 3 in its infancy. Woody Garcia, among other talents, was a
major Tampa big band leader, playing all the major Latin dates,
many Anglo dates as well. Woody was a fine, and unaccented,
English-language announcer but one of the best, and unappreciated,
in Spanish; used to make those big boomers coming out of Mexico
City sound like a bunch of sissies.
Woody died of cancer in the 1970s. |
