Insurrection in Southside St. Petersburg. The Uhurus, a socialist organization, militant, black, and anti police, has been successful over the last 10 years in keeping routine police patrols and drug busts to a bare minimum in the predominantly African American section of the city. When cops do go into the area, they are always accused of police brutality, and once even accused of murdering an 18-year-old black male, who had tried to run over the police officer trying to apprehend him. The cop was cleared of the shooting, but the Uhurus got a federally funded gymnasium named after the thug, the Tyron Lewis Gym of Our Own. A Tat racist sounding isn't it?

All the while the city fathers have had their heads buried in the white sands of the area. The police chief swears his department is actively pursuing the drug dealers, though twice last week cops had explosive devices thrown at them, causing five cops to be injured. The Mayor, Rick Baker, well, he has not been available for comment, and you see he needs the Uhurus support to gain re-election.

It's time for the Feds to step in. Neither this police department, nor this city government is capable of conducting a believable investigation It is time for all citizens of St. Petersburg to be given the equal protection they deserve. Black folks need reassurance their 12 year old children will not be peddling drugs, nor risk being another casualty in a town without pity.

As for Mayor Rick Baker, it's time you take your job serious, and face up to your lack of leadership. Either lead the city, or get out of the way of people who are willing to take on the Uhurus head on.
