The Democratic Party sold America Bill Clinton as a “New Democrat”. Clinton was the prototype of a new type of politician, more middle of the road than your typical Democrat. Well so much for the new Democrat.

When New Jersey Senator Robert Torrecelli got in trouble with the ethics gang on the hill, his poll numbers slipped. The Democrats responded by getting Clinton to convince “The Torch” to drop out of the race rather than hand over control of the Senate to the GOP. “Don’t worry about the law, we own the judges”. He didn’t, and now the Democrats have another Democrat in the race and he is leading in the polls. He would not be considered a “New Democrat”, he is in his mid 70s, Frank Lautenberg is back in politics.

In Minnesota, Senator Paul Wellstone was in trouble, trailing his challenger Norm Coleman. The Senator and his family perished in a plane crash over the weekend. The Democrats needed someone in the race, and went for Walter Mondale, also in his mid 70s. So much for “New Democrats”. Mondale dates back to Hubert Humphrey days. “Fritz” is from another era, a man who in 1989 turned down the Democrats call to run for another office saying they needed to go to newer candidates, he could not run for everything. Apparently Mondale still has one more race in him.

I guess in times such as these when nature and voters decide one way, the Democrats change the rules and the candidates because anything is better than Republicans in charge. Jim Jeffords is an example. Keep your eyes on Chaffee from Rhode Island, he could be the jumper in 2002.

That's how I see it!
