Janet Jackson's breast expose' has ricocheted across the American entertainment
scene. Her and Justin Timberlake will never realize what an incredible
watermark they set.
Michael Powell has summonsed the heads of many Media giants to Washington to
read them the riot act, and inform companies that not only stiff fines are in
the offing, but also the revocation of licenses. That last part must have really
rang in those corporate ears.
It wasn't the Howard Sterns or Bubbas who had been under attack since day one
by religious groups opposed to their radio styles, now it was Joe and Molly Six-pack,
who normally do not complain, that filled the FCC mailboxes full, as well as
the desks of many Congressmen and Senators. The violators stained the Super
Bowl halftime show, long a bastion of Middle American values. That did it, not
the climate in media has changed.
Look for more changes in programming, TV and even cable may be the next to feel
the effects of this new American Puritanism. Ozzie and Harriet 2004 may not be
far from your TV Guide pages.
