If there is any doubt as to who was in the wrong in the New Orleans police beating of 64 year old retired teacher Robert Davis, you need to know it was the cops.
I am always defending police officers every where, they have a tough job. But this episode in New Orleans was clearly the fault of the police. It wasn’t just the way they handled Davis, but the way they manhandled a reporter who clearly showed credentials.
There was no apparent reason why Davis was beaten senseless, none whatsoever. This is not a street bum who was drunk, a hoodlum, a drug dealer, this was a retired school teacher. Even this morning Davis says he harbors no animosity towards the police. Davis says he knows the cops who beat him were just “a couple of bad apples that need to dealt with”. I don’t think I would be humble enough to have made that statement.
Davis is being charged with pubic intoxication, battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. I didn’t see any punches thrown by Davis, all I saw was a 64 year man laying in a pool of blood with 4 goons standing around him.
Not only should these cops be fired, they should go to jail for aggravated battery. No citizen should be treated like Robert Davis, and this is a fine opportunity for New Orleans to set the table right, and make sure they make an example of these guys, so this never ever happens again in the Crescent City.
